There is a common misconception that aluminum is less strong, or durable than steel. The Ford F-150 blew that myth out of the water when it became the only 2016 pickup to earn an IIHS Top Safety Pick.
Now, the weight-saving benefit of aluminum alloy is coming to the Super Duty.
When Ford engineers replaced the 2017 Super Duty's steel doors with military-grade aluminum ones, they shed pounds off the truck's total weight. That weight savings could then be re-invested in other performance-critical parts of the truck -- the frame, suspension, axles, driveline, and brakes.
It is up to 350 pounds lighter than the previous generation, with a fully-boxed frame that is 24 times more rigid than the previous generation.
